Settings for Web Content
This preferences page provides Pale Moon settings for web
content, pop-ups, fonts, and languages.
Pop-ups
By default, Pale Moon blocks annoying pop-up windows on websites.
Unchecking this option will disable pop-up blocking.
Some websites make legitimate use of pop-up windows. Therefore, you can
allow these sites to open pop-ups anyway. To do so, click Exceptions…, enter the site name,
and click Allow. To remove a
website from the list, select it and then click Remove Site. To clear the list
completely, click Remove All Sites.
Images
Pale Moon allows you to control whether images in web pages are loaded
or not. The default setting to automatically load all images is
strongly recommended, but if your specific conditions require it, you
may change this setting:
- Automatically: Automatically requests and loads all images
in a web page.
- Never: Never loads images in a web page.
- Originating server only: Only loads images from the same
server as the web page is loaded from, and doesn't load images that are
hosted on a third-party server. Although this setting potentially
improves your privacy, it will not work for websites that use dedicated
image servers or content distribution networks.
Fonts and Colors
Default font and Size: Web
pages are usually displayed in the font and size specified here
(measured in pixels). However, web pages can override these choices
unless you specify otherwise in the Fonts dialog. Click the Advanced… button to
access the Fonts dialog and to change this and other fonts options.
Fonts Dialog
- From the Fonts for drop-down list,
choose a language group/script. For instance, to set default fonts for
the West European languages/scripts (Latin), choose Latin. For a language/script not in
the list, choose Other Writing
Systems.
- Select whether proportional text should be serif (like
"Times New Roman") or sans-serif (like "Arial"). Then specify the font
size you want for proportional text.
- Specify the font to use for Serif, Sans-serif and
Monospace fonts. You can also change the size for
Monospace fonts .
You can also set the minimum web page font size. This is
useful to prevent sites from using overly small fonts that are barely
readable.
- Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of
my selections above: By default, Pale Moon uses the fonts
specified by the web page author. Disabling this option
will force all sites to use your default fonts instead. Please note
that this may severely impact the display and usability of some sites.
- Character Encoding for Legacy Content:
The character encoding selected here will be used to display pages that
don't specify which encoding to use.
Colors Dialog
Text and Background: Here you can change the
default text and background color to be used on web pages that haven't
specified that information. Click on the color samples to select
colors.
- Use system colors Check this option to use the colors defined in
your operating system settings instead of the colors specified above.
Link Colors: Here you can change the default
colors for Web links. Click on the color samples to select colors.
- Underline links: By default, links are
underlined on web pages. Uncheck this option
to disable this. Note that many sites specify their own styling rules
and this option has no effect
on those sites.
- Version 26 and before:
If you are using a High Contrast (accessibility) operating system
theme, colors specified by the page will always be overridden.
Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my
selections above: Select this option
(default) to allow pages to use the colors specified by the page author.
- Version 27 and later:
Override the colors specified by the page with my
selections above:
- Always: Select this option to force all sites to use
your default colors.
- Only with High Contrast themes: This
option will make
Pale Moon use the colors specified by the web page author, except when
you are using a High Contrast (accessibility) theme.
- Never: Select this option to make Pale Moon always use the colors
specified by the web page author.
Languages
Some web pages are offered in more than one language. Click
the Choose…
button to specify your preferred language or languages.
Languages Dialog: To add a language, click Select
a language to add…, choose the language, and click the button.
Remove a language by selecting it in the list of active languages and
clicking the AddRemove
button. You can also reorder languages using the Move Up and Move Down buttons to
determine the most preferred one in case a page is provided in multiple
of your listed languages.
JavaScript
Enable WebAssembly (WASM): Checking this box
enables the use of so-called WebAssembly (WASM) content. WASM is a
bytecode format version of JavaScript that is often used for transpiled
programs and is a way for websites to deliver code that has been
pre-compiled for use in the browser. For more details on WASM see e.g. Wikipedia's article
on WASM
Video
These settings control several aspects of video playback on web pages.
- Enable Media Source Extensions (MSE): This
enables the use
of Media Source Extensions, a streaming media delivery method used for
video on a number of websites. This is enabled by default.
- Enable MSE for MP4 video: This enables the
use of MSE for media in MP4/h.264 video formats. This is enabled by
default.
- Enable MSE for WebM video: This enables
the use of MSE for media in the WebM video format.
