Pale Moon: Site News

Moon 3.5.8 has been released, with the necessary changes to the site.
I've drawn upon the lessons learnt from building 3.6 to give 3.5.8 an
extra boost, with a custom fully-optimized runtime library to go along
with it. Since this is not the "mainstream" version of Pale Moon, it is
mentioned on the main page but the main release build is and will
remain a 3.6 one. This will probably be the last version of the 3.5
based browsers that will be built. If 3.6 doesn't work for you for
whatever reason (in most cases add-on related) then you should be able
to use this for quite a while yet.

Pale
Moon 3.6.0.5 for Athlon XP has been released, with the necessary
changes to the site. There was a little less opportunity to actually
test this extensively on an Athlon XP machine but what has been tested
so far has been without issues.

Pale Moon 3.6.0.5 has been released, with the necessary changes to the site, of course.
I've had a number of prereleases for this one, as I worked out some
kinks and tried some different optimizations. The end result being, I
think, a major improvement in the areas of the browser that will be
used most (networking, rendering, scripting). I know the Athlon XP
version is falling behind at the moment, but I wanted to have a stable
main release before building the other version. I might also not
continue the portable version of Pale Moon the way I've done it so far,
but look into using a different method instead with my own loader.

A
lot of work and a full week of testing later, Pale Moon 3.6 has been
released (take 2). This also meant a lot of changes to the site to
reflect what had to be updated. Time for me to sit back and take a
breather.. well, once I'm done with my paying job for today, that is ;)

More
reports of issues, also with the official Mozilla Firefox, and personal
testing with Pale Moon 3.6 has made me decide to completely pull the
3.6 version for the time being. I'll be working on trying to fix this
severe bug myself until the FF contributors find a more permanent
solution to this showstopper bug.
It also seems I'd need a more powerful machine if I want to build
future versions of Pale Moon - my current hardware is reaching its
limits as far as speed/RAM goes for compiling this monster with the
options needed for full optimization, or, in some cases, to even build
at all.
If you have spare hardware, I'll gladly take donations ;)

Shortly
after release of the 3.6 version, it came to light that Pale Moon 3.6
suffers from a major bug that the Firefox 3.6 release code has: The
"OMG where are my bookmarks!?" could be heard echoing over the
Internet. As a result, I've put up a clear notification on the home
page and made sure to have the tried and tested 3.5.6.1 version at the
ready in case people have this problem. Your bookmarks are not lost,
they are simply not displayed/not accessible. With all the
alpha/beta/RC releases I would have seriously expected people to have
found this -before- releasing the code as "final release". Since Pale
Moon is based on this flawed Firefox code, it also displays this
problem.

Tests
have been flawless so far. Pushing the release forward to stay close to
Mozilla's release. Athlon XP version is being compiled, portable
version will take some more time, as I want to make sure to make it a
less spartan and more polished release. WinPenPack's team has not
answered to my request for them to take care of a customized release,
so I will have to do it myself.

Pale Moon 3.6 has been compiled and is currently in its testing phase. Stay tuned for updates and the release.
16 Jan 2010
Decided
to re-evaluate my need for ads. Since the agent I'm using won't allow
me to add ads to the start page (which would be a prime spot) because
of
lack of link-ins, I'll have to have a look at other advertisement
options anyway. Advertisement frame has been added to the home page,
above the fold but on the side. I tried a top-of-page position but it
simply
breaks the site layout too much. Now the waiting is for people to buy
space and actually help me recover some of the cash I had to spend to
host it.
14 Jan 2010 15:00
I'm not happy about having to do this, but I'm forced to compensate for my expenses by having some ads up on the website. I'll
be able to take them back down later on if and when I have made enough
to cover the hosting costs, OR if and when people actually offer to
donate some money to help me out. It doesn't take much for me to have
this page hosted, but it's more than I can currently afford to spend.
Every little bit helps!

Moved
some content around on the site, to keep the general information page
more concise, and added a section on specific differences between Pale
Moon and its origins, Firefox, on the Technical Details page.
Examined the newly released Firefox 3.5.7, and found that the grand
total of 3 bugfixes/improvements (with only one "real" bug) was
definitely not enough reason to consider it for a point release. This
version will be skipped.

Happy New Year to everyone!
A slightly delayed update, but the Portable version of Pale Moon has been updated to 3.5.6.1 as well now.
30 Dec 2009 21:00
Today,
the website was moved to a dedicated hosting company to be able to
handle the traffic. So yes, I've had to dish out money for this project
now - I'm pondering if I should try to sell ad space to make up for it
or not, although I'd prefer to keep the website ad-free.
26 Dec 2009 23:00
Seems
like today, people had nothing better to do than to launch a DoS attack
at the web server. Sigh. What the hell is wrong with you people? It's
not like there's anything worth-while on here that warrants disrupting
the web site with attacks like that. It's Christmas, for crying out
loud, too... One has to just wonder: WHY? Jealous about the browser?...
22 Dec 2009 11:30
Updated Pale Moon for Athlon XP to 3.5.6.1 now - Enjoy!
21 Dec 2009 22:30
After
getting some help with Regular Expressions, downloading links are once
again back to straight URLs and no longer routed through a PHP script
that I had put in place to prevent hotlinking on the main site. A big
thanks to the people putting up easy to understand and properly
explained information pages about using mod_rewrite in Apache to do
this internally in the server!
It's a pity that I even have to go through these steps to prevent
external sites from directly linking to the installers, but it seems
quite a number of what are supposed to be "software archives" just have
a system in place that, to the average user, pretends to host the
download, but instead just redirect people's browsers to the official
homepages of software. Some even offering "premium downloads" this way.
Shame on you!
21 Dec 2009 02:30
A
minor update to create 3.5.6.1 - I would normally not release point
versions like this, but it seems the solution for pages failing to load
is definitely something that makes this warranted.
20 Dec 2009 22:30
Added a troubleshooting page for some problems people have indicated when using Pale Moon.
20 Dec 2009 14:00
The site has been updated to reflect the needed changes for 3.5.6 - as well as moving some content to different pages.
04 Dec 2009 12:00
Since
so many people asked about releasing a 3.6 beta, I've spent several
hours messing with code and compiling things to make a 3.6 beta Pale
Moon. Preliminary tests are OK, so I dropped it on the site, but I want
to make absolutely clear that this is not a real release for Pale Moon.
It's an experimental build, and I certainly won't use it as my main
browser.
03 Dec 2009 19:15
OK,
I give up :P If it's not one thing, it's another - the new free hosting
had an option for "type of site" being "software/download", so it would
be clear to the hosting company what kind of files would be hosted
there... And then it turns out that installers, programs and other
executables are immediately removed upon upload, even zipped. What is
the f-ing point?
I will not put any more time and energy into actually providing a
full-blown mirror site and maintaining it, instead I will look into
more file hosting alternatives. Just wasted 2 days messing with and adapting html and php for naught, that's enough.
03 Dec 2009 17:00
After another full day of trying to contact Hostecs to see if I could
get a reasonable (or any, for that matter) answer out of them as to
what happened to the hosting and customer account used for the Pale
Moon mirror site, it's become clear they have no intention on giving me
a response about the matter. Extremely unprofessional, and if this is
any indication about their service, I would strongly discourage anyone
to get an account there. They just lost a potential paying customer by
doing this, and have earned themselves a scolding review on some sites
comparing hosting packages.
I have since signed up with a new hosting provider to have a mirror
site up, as I still can't afford to use my poor DSL for the world
downloading Pale Moon, and I can't afford to pay for proper
professional hosting - let's hope this one gets a better track record!
02 Dec 2009 13:50
First news entry on this page - unfortunately bad news immediately:
Hostecs, who has provided me with a mirror space for this web site, has
taken it upon themselves to cancel my hosting account as, well as, by
the looks of it, my user account. No explanation, no reason given, no
warning...
So, for the time being, I will have to change the main site and PAD to reflect this, while I wait for an answer from them.
